Dear Dear Dr. Saab!
Aaj subah-subah mujhe teen karodh mil gaya!!! Main paise-ki baat nahin kar raha hoon, balki aapki 'Wah Wah Wah'-ki baat kar raha hoon. Your compliments are as precious to me! Your encouragement really stirs up my enthusiasm to write more, whether they are publishable or not!
Actually while in college, I had this secret wish to try for Film Institute of India for a course in direction or script-writing, but then such a thing was an unknown territory considering the conservative middle-class environment that I grew up in. So here I am now as an engineer far away from the 'Big bungalow in Pali Hill' that you have mentioned!
But we all must thank sulekha for providing an outlet for all our expressions, for which there is hardly any scope in our professional lives.
I am touched that you stayed up late just to respond whole-heartedly to my review. Millions of thanks to you for all the kind words, which I wonder whether I really deserve!
Also thanks for that tit-bit on Captain Nemo. He had an impressive presence in the film. Raj Kapoor sure knew how to choose his star-cast. I too really feel for his failure with 'Jaagte Raho' and 'Mera Naam Joker'. 'Jaagte Raho' was an experimental film that won critical acclaim but failed at the box-office. MNJ was RK's most ambitious venture, but he got little carried away and went overboard with his self-indulgent 'self-pity'-ing image and also the length of the film was little trying on the patience, especially the last part. But S-J's music in MNJ was something out of the world, that still makes every hair on skin stand!
Thank You again from the heart for all the encouragement and suggestions!
Regards,
S.V.Nathan.
Dear Sablu-ji,
I thought of responding to you first since I know you will be off-line throughout the week-end. Other friends may excuse me for this.
Sablu-ji, Aapne to as usual mujhe 'overwhelm' kar diya apni taarif-se! You really made my day. But please don't put yourself into any trouble with your boss like diverting yourself from any important project work etc.! Anyway, I do hope my review provided you the much needed brief relaxing break from work. Aap-ko mazaa aaya to samajh lijiye mujhe bahut-hi mazaa aa gaya!
Thanks a million for all the kind compliments!
Cheers!
S.V.Nathanh.
Well-played again, Dr. Saab!
But this time, I won't give credit to you because all the credit goes to Madame Kamath to whom you have rightly dedicated this song! She deserves all the applause for bringing out the real 'Kalakaar' hiding in you!
However I will definitely thank you for providing me 'nasha' in the form of this soothing melody from 'Aradhana' which was truly The Great Burman-Da's tour-de-force!
Now may I invite you to join my matinee show of 'Shri 420' which has been just released at http://svnathan.sulekha.com/blog/post/2008/07/triumph-of-a-tramp-shri-420-a-review.htm !

Sablu-bhai!
Sorry, I got tied up with office work and could not comment promptly. I listened to your song today. Aap poochte hain, 'Tum hi kaho yeh koi baat hai?'. Main sirf yehi kahoonga 'Wah! Wah! kya baat hai'!!. You have become so seasoned ki ab main taarif nahin karoonga, but sirf 'farmaaish' karoonga! Mera farmaaish hai one beautiful KK song composed by Hemant kumar-ji for 'Do Dooni Char' - 'Hawaon-pe likh do hawaon-ke naam , Is anjaan pardesiyon-ka salaam!'. Another 'farmaaish' is a little more complicated and will require more practice on your side because it has KK's 'female' voice as well besides his original voice. the song is one of the funniest Kishore Kumar songs, surprisingly composed by the usually 'serious' Salil Chowdhry. The song is 'Aake seedhi lagi mori dil-pe nazariya, Hoi---Hoi-- O saanwariya!!' from 'Half Ticket'! You can take this as my 'punishment' for missing the funny 'Wa-Wa' part from 'Ek ladki bheegi bhaagi-si'! So in do gaanon-ko dhoondh nikaliye aur pesh kijiye!
Ho jaay aur zara masti sablu-ji-ki zubaan-se!
Cheers,
S.V.Nathan.
Dr.Saab,
Again sorry for again being late! Actually I had kept this one from yours in reserve for my today's relaxation! I think I am getting 'flute-oholic' from Dr.Kamath brand nasha! I think your flute sounded little extra enthusiastic bcos it is your favorite (mine too!) music-director's song. 'Pahadi' is sure a great raaga.I love it. Are most of the 'echo' effect songs based on 'Pahadi'. For example, 'Deewana mastana' from 'Bambai-ka Babu'? Your flute really refreshed my evening. Thank you so much! Now what about tomorrow's 'pahadi' peg?!
As for your 'farmaaish' of 'Sangam' review, I have to refresh my memory and this is such a place you hardly get Hindi film DVDs. But recently I saw another old RK movie 'Shri 420' on TV and my review is already on the way anytime. So please look out for him!

S.V.Nathan.
Sorry Doc, I'm slipping on my comments.
Doing some hard work (for a change!) at office. So after the extra hours which has become a routine since last 2 weeks, I wanted badly to unwind and your flute tine was like a great refreshing 'pick-me-up'! It was just awesome! I could almost feel the chill of mountain air on my scalp! You have created a beautiful echo effect and very rightly kept away other background beats which could have distracted from the real feel. it was truly lovely. I am beginning to get enchanted with this 'pahadi' raaga , thanks to your introduction and references. Abhi meri bhi ek farmaaish kabool kijiye! The song I have in mind is 'Phaili hui hai sapnon-ki raahen', a beautiful Lata song composed by the great SDB for 'House No.44'. I think it is of the same raaga, but I am not sure. Hope to listen to this one with echo effect from you one of these days!
Regards,
S.V.Nathan.
Lovely song-selection and lovely rendering, Dr.Saab!
'Chhoti Bahen' is probably the first ever Hindi film I vaguely remember seeing as a kid.I hardly remember anything in the film except that it was in 'Surya' theatre ( in your ex-neighbourhood!) and I faintly remember scenes of the songs, like 'Main Rickshawala','O Kali anarki--', 'Main rangeela pyarka rahi' and of course this beautiful Mukesh number which I think Rehman sings standing in some verandah. I have'nt seen the movie since then!
Thank you for re-kindling the nostalgic memories and the beautiful flute-piece.
Regards,
S.V.Nathan
Divine, absolutely divine!
Dr.Saab, I could not listen before as I was a little busy with office work. But today morning, I made it a point to listen your bhajan first. It was a great way to start the day! Your voice acquires a special lustre singing this 'bhajan' and I could feel your immersion in Sai Baba's devotion. I remember this bhajan in the film and if I am not mistaken, it was in Rafi's voice for Shatrughan Sinha on screen.
Thank you for Saibaba's blessings that you have sent through this post! Jai Sainath!
Regards,
S.V.Nathan.
Arre Sablu-ji, Aap hain kya?! For a minute I thought Dr. Saab is playing the flute! Aap unse flute kab cheen liya?! I am sure he will be thrilled with your rendering and wil give you distinction! I am not qualified to rate your rendering, but I enjoyed it thoroughly! I also have an amateur's flute lying with me which doesn't co-operate with me when I want to play! Maybe it doesn't know how to play! But tell me, where were you hiding your flute all these days?! 'Pahadi' sounded so 'cool' on your flute!
'Haathon-mein flute tere milne-se pehle
Tere sur mere kaanon-se milne-se pehle
Kahan thi yeh baatein, aise talents, aise blog-ein!
Aapne to 'Kora Kagaz'-mein apna poora 'stamp' chod diya!!
Well done!
Cheers,
S.V.Nathan.
Triumph of a Tramp! : ‘ SHRI 420’ – A review
Dear Langa-ji,
Thank you for the feedback. Raj Kapoor was one of those rare film-makers who combined social substance with popular style and became highly successful.
